Sukkot Activities Ideas with Kids

Hello dear readers,

Sukkot is one of my favorite holidays, and one of the reasons why is all the time to spend with family. True, there’s a lot of family time in the previous holidays of Tishrei, but Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur just have a different feel to them, you know? During those holidays and the whole Ten Days of Repentance period, there’s more of an inwards approach that we should be looking at ourselves and trying to improve our behaviors. On sukkot, though, it’s more of a festive feeling all around. There’s hallel, and sitting in a beautified sukkah, and yummy food, and more!

Activities for Sukkot That You Can Do with Your Family

On sukkot you have a whole week to make the most of the holiday and the time with family. So what are you going to do? Obviously, your plans will vary based on a number of factors. For example, if your kids have school during sukkot, then there’s obviously a limit as to when you can do things. Similarly, a lot can depend on your children’s ages; the activities I’m planning for my teenage children (and nieces and nephews) are quite different from what we did ten years ago. Still, if you’re looking for some sukkot activities to do with your kids, here are a few simple activity suggestions/ideas:

  1. SUKKAH DECORATIONS. This one is appropriate for teens & young children (all ages) since all sukkahs need decorations! Most people like to have some decorations in their sukkah before the first night of the holiday, but you can also keep adding new works of art that are created during the holiday itself. You can get some art supplies and set up a workshop in the sukkah itself, have finger-painting and crayons and glitter and all sorts of things that kids love to create with.
  2. FUN AROUND TOWN. This one depends on where you are, and what kinds of things are available to you. If your kids are a little older and don’t have school, consider a local art museum that you’ve never been to, or a hike (or easy walk) in a nearby nature park. If daytimes aren’t an option due to school and/or work, maybe something like mini-golf or bowling in the evening is the choice for you. Even a trip to the local mall can be fun if you add something like a scavenger hunt to it! The point is that even if you’re in your familiar environment, it’s still possible to do something fun with the kids, whether it’s at a place you haven’t been for a while or a familiar place with a new twist.
  3. RELAX! Sometimes it’s even simpler: Do nothing! Well, not nothing, but nothing structured. For example, if you’re at a kosher sukkot hotel you might want to use the pool for an afternoon, swimming (or sitting by the pool).

More soon,

Ariella
