Elderly couple having conversation at their kitchen

Pesach Chopped

Hello dear readers,

I was looking at some photos from last pesach, and I was reminded of a fun family event from last year. We had wanted to make a new family tradition by having this event every year, but since we’re going to a Passover hotel in Florida this year, we might do it every other year instead, like the Olympics. (It’s a cooking event, so I won’t complain about not having to do the shopping and cleaning for it!).

Okay, so you want to know what the event is?

It’s Pesach Chopped!

For those of you who don’t know, Chopped is a television show where chefs have to prepare dishes with weird mystery ingredients like haggis and sea cucumber (yuck!). My sister-in-law Ruth loves cooking shows, and thought it would be fun to have a Chopped-style competition on the last day of chol hamoed. We all thought it would be fun, so Ruth and Abe went shopping and came back with some mystery ingredients, and they and Grandpa Yossi were the judges.

We had three rounds, just like on the show: appetizer, main dish and dessert. We played in teams, so Rachel and I were a team, competing against Mikey and Shira, Aryeh and Ronit, and Amanda and Oren. We only have one kitchen of course, not four like on the television show, so it was a bit of a squeeze, but it was still loads of fun!

I remember that the four mystery ingredients for the appetizer rounds were mushrooms, charoset, anchovies and fruit leather. Now I know I’m not a bad cook (if I do say so myself!), but I had no idea how to put those things together! Ronit and I spent the first six of our 20 minutes trying to think of how to use all four of those weird things. Eventually we tried some kind of salad, but the judges weren’t buying it, and we were the first team voted off (sorry Ronit!). I don’t remember what the other mystery ingredients were, but I’ll always remember mushrooms, charoset, anchovies and fruit leather!

(And in case you were wondering, Mikey and Shira won the contest. Abe and Ruth, I see what you did there in picking your son and daughter-in-law like that! But they were so cute, and that dessert they made was so yummy!)

Anyway, that was fun. As I said we’ll be in Boca Raton for our pesach vacation, so maybe we’ll try next year.

If any readers out there do Pesach Chopped, let me know in the comments! I’d love to hear what you cooked up, and what your mystery ingredients were!

More soon,

Ariella
